This project is a celebration for Mark Making.
Mark making is a practice we rarely consider to be a fundamental human exercise. As someone who never studied an art discipline before coming to Falmouth, I continually burdened myself on the fixation that art was something exclusive and unattainable. Yet, a deep fascination of mine towards ancient cave art took me into the depths of a personal realisation. Leaving our mark is something innately human, it doesn’t take expertise, just a willingness to let go and to be present in the experience of making.
For this project I wanted to gather authentic marks, ones that were emotive and driven through a connection to experience. To do this, I hosted an open mark making workshop, inviting all students of Falmouth the take part.
I crafted a poster and zine for the event, both made using the risograph printer. The zine included a description of what the aims were for the workshop, as well as three emotive prompts for the participants to respond too.
To expand my collection of marks, I got in touch with a local art gallery Grays Wharf. They were keen to let me host one of my mark making workshops in their space. The session was in collaboration with their Mark Making sessions which were run every Wednesday evening.
I collated all of the marks and organised them into a book which celebrates their beauty. I chose my colour pallets from French cave paintings, tying in my inspirations on a fundamental level. For my final outcome, I hosted an exhibition in the graphic design space on campus. Showcasing the book, resources and materials used in the workshops, as well as a poster that celebrates some of the marks included.
